The Institute of Certified Professional Managers (ICPM) Specializes in management training and certification. Founded in 1974 by the National Management Association (NMA), the International Management Council (IMC), and management educators, the Institute has certified over 10,000 managers worldwide in all industries. The Institute works with individuals, employer groups, NMA chapters, colleges/universities and private training organizations to offer CM certification. Certification confirms management competence, demonstrates professional commitment, and enhances career opportunities and advancement. The CM certification is recognized in the United States and internationally.
WHAT IS THE CM PROGRAM?
The Certified Manager Program is a professional training and certification program that:
develops and enhances general management skills, and
prepares individuals to take the CM management certification exams.
Those who successfully complete the CM exams achieve Certified Manager (CM) certification, a prestigious credential that recognizes competency and professionalism of managers in all fields.
WHY CM CERTIFICATION?
Certification has long been a mark of competency and credibility. CLUs (Certified Liability Underwriters), CFAs (Chartered Financial Analysts), and MCPs (Microsoft Certified Professionals) have all successfully used certification in their respective fields to distinguish them from their colleagues. Now managers can obtain professional recognition with the CM Program.
For individuals, CM certification:
builds management knowledge & skills
reflects professional achievement
enhances career opportunities and advancement
For employers, CM certification:
- confirms management competence
- demonstrates professional commitment
- sets standards for quality management
How Do I Become Certified?
Certification can be accomplished in four easy steps as follows:
1. Application
2. Training & Study
3. Assessment & Feedback
4. Recognition
1. APPLICATION
The application determines eligibility to take the CM certification exams and is based on a point system.
Education points are awarded for high school completion, college degree and non-degree programs, and management training (including CM preparatory classes). Education points are verified by diploma, transcript, and/or certificates of completion.
Experience points are awarded for managerial, non-managerial, general business, leadership, and teaching experience. Experience points are verified by reference statements signed by former employers.
Applicants that meet only one of the education or experience criteria may apply to the CM Program as an Associate CM and earn full CM status when the deficient requirement has been filled and documentation has been presented to ICPM.
2. TRAINING & STUDY
Preparation for the CM exams can be accomplished through individual self-directed study or group study. Group classes are facilitated by employers, colleges/universities, private training organizations, National Management Association (NMA) chapters, and other business entities. Contact ICPM to inquire about group classes.
Training materials for the CM Program include:
- Three printed study manuals with integrated case examples, application-based exercises, and review questions.
- ICPM's Online Learning Center featuring chapter reviews, practice quizzes, PowerPoint slides, and other study aids.
- Instructors' manuals and instructors' PowerPoint slides (available for CM Program facilitators).
Content of the CM Program integrates contemporary management theory with the more traditional management approach of planning, leading, organizing, and controlling.
3. ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK
The three CM assessment exams coincide with the three CM study manuals. Exam scheduling is accomplished by phoning or emailing ICPM 7-10 days before you desire to test. ICPM offers the ultimate in testing flexibility by delivering exams when and where you want them, 7-days a week, 365 days a year. Test takers can choose from paper-based or computer-based exams.
Each CM exam consists of:
- 120 multiple-choice questions (US) or 100 questions (international),
- a two hour timed, closed book exam,
- a mix of knowledge, decision-making, and analytical questions.
To maintain quality, the CM exams regularly undergo statistical analysis for reliability and validity.
Exam feedback is mailed to test takers after the 15th of each month. Results are reported as “P” for pass and “N” for no pass. The grade report also provides scaled sub scores from 1-5 on specific content areas. The sub scores identify areas of strength and weakness. Computer-based exams provide immediate on-line feedback (“P” or “N”), in addition to the written grade report. Test takers who receive a result of “N” or no pass may retake the exam by applying additional study and repaying the full test fee. Test takers must wait 30 days before retaking an exam.
4. Recognition
After successfully passing the CM exams, your achievement will be recognized by colleagues, employers, customers, vendors and others in the business community. New CMs receive a congratulatory letter, CM certificate, CM lapel pin, and a copy of the ICPM Code of Ethics. They are entitled to use the title “Certified Manager” and the registered CM title designation, i.e. John Smith, CM. ICPM recognizes CMs by sending press releases to local papers and announcement letters to designated senior managers. The names of new CMs are also published in ICPM's bi-annual newsletter, The Certified Letter.
I'M A CERTIFIED MANAGER, NOW WHAT?
Becoming a CM carries with it certain responsibilities and benefits. Certified Managers are responsible for maintaining:
- high standards of performance,
- professionalism in business interactions,
- the ICPM Code of Ethics, and
- annual CM recertification requirements.
Annual recertification keeps your CM and management skills current. CMs recertify each January by paying a $50 professional fee and submitting a plan of 10 hours of continuing education to ICPM. In return, CMs receive the following benefits:
- Management World (online journal),
- The Certified Letter (online newsletter),
- CM Directory (online contact for CMs),
- JobNet (online management jobs),
- access to a network of CMs worldwide.
Applications may be completed online at www.icpm.biz or can be downloaded from the website and completed in paper format.
